How to Host an Equipment Donation Drive for Tech For Troops and Support Veterans
At Tech For Troops, we empower under-resourced Veterans and their families by providing the digital skills, training, and technology they need to thrive in today’s workforce. Hosting an equipment donation drive is a practical way to support that mission while keeping usable technology out of landfills and placing essential tools into the hands of Veterans rebuilding their lives.
If your business, church, school, civic group, or neighborhood association is looking for a meaningful service project, an equipment drive is simple to organize and has direct local impact.
Why an Equipment Donation Drive Matters
Electronic devices such as laptops, desktops, tablets, and phones are essential tools for job searching, training, education, telehealth, and staying connected with family. Many Veterans and their families lack access to reliable technology.
Hosting a drive helps:
-
Expand access to technology for Veterans and their families
-
Support digital literacy and job readiness
-
Reduce environmental waste through responsible refurbishment and recycling
Getting Started With Your Donation Drive
Here is a straightforward plan to launch a successful drive:
-
Define your host group
Invite participation from your business, school, church, HOA, civic organization, or neighborhood network. -
Decide where and when to collect
Set up clearly marked boxes or bins in common areas with simple instructions for donors. -
Promote your drive
Use email, newsletters, internal communications, social media, and printed flyers to clearly communicate what items you are collecting and how donations support Veterans locally. -
Share the most common items collected
Focus on the equipment that makes the greatest impact:
-
Laptops, working or non-working, preferably with power adapters
-
Desktop computers
-
Flat panel monitors
-
Tablets and iPads
-
Cell phones
-
Keyboards, mice, and power cords
Important donor instructions:
-
All laptops and cell phones should be unlocked.
-
Devices should be provided with the password if one is set.
-
When possible, devices should be reset to factory settings before donation.
These steps help ensure devices can be securely refurbished and redeployed. If equipment cannot be refurbished, Tech For Troops ensures it is recycled responsibly.
-
Assign a point person
Designate someone to monitor donations and coordinate final delivery.
